Derick Hinton of Poughkeepsie turned himself into Fayetteville, N.C., police on Thursday and was arrested on a warrant by the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department for the July 11 robbery, said Det. Lt. Matt Clark.
The incident took place around 9:30 a.m. July 11 on Garden Street when Hinton allegedly sprayed the woman in the face with what is believed to be mace, causing burning and significant pain to the victim, Clark said.
He then forcibly grabbed her purse and fled.
After police put out pictures of his vehicle and his mug shot the public responded by providing information to his whereabouts, Clark said.
Once he has been cleared for extradition, Hinton will be transported to Poughkeepsie.
"The City of Poughkeepsie Police wishes to thank all the law enforcement agencies who assisted in locating Hinton, and the members of the public who gave us information on his whereabouts," Clark said.
